CorDEX Instruments to donate £150,000 of equipment to University of Aberdeen and launch new partnership

CorDEX Instruments has forged a strategic partnership with the University of Aberdeen, investing £150,000 to provide intrinsically safe and explosion proof technologies for use in research.
The deal will see CorDEX provide equipment and onsite training in the correct use of these groundbreaking oil and gas tools, which are certified for safe use offshore and in explosive environments.
Over the next three years, CorDEX will donate its latest handheld devices to the university. The ToughPIX digital camera and UT5000 Intrinsically Safe Thickness Gauge, which measures pipeline thickness to detect corrosion, are being supplied in the first phase. A student will spend the summer using the UT5000 - the world’s first pipeline tester designed for use offshore – in a research project.
Dr Neill Renton, head of chemical engineering within the Department of Engineering welcomed the new partnership. He said: “CorDEX Instruments’ tools are groundbreaking and we are excited about the prospect of having access to the equipment and also the expertise that the CorDEX team will bring to the department.
“The UT5000 Intrinsically Safe Thickness Gauge is of particular interest as I know first-hand how much of a challenge asset integrity and corrosion testing is for the oil and gas industry. To have access to a tool that can be brought offshore or into a plant at any time without having to wait for a scheduled shutdown has the potential to change the way operators work.
“The cost and time saving on the administration alone is staggering and if you add to that the value of the data the tool records and its ability to build predictive maintenance reports, the impact could be far reaching. It has the potential to improve safety inspections in ageing assets, which supports the Health and Safety Executive’s KP4 inspection standards introduced last year.”
Tony Holliday, CEO of CorDEX Instruments said: “It is incredibly important for us to forge these ties with key academic institutions. The University of Aberdeen is a leading educator of engineers in the UK and we are pleased to be involved in the cutting-edge research taking place there. We feel it is vital for students of this discipline to gain knowledge from current industry practice and we hope to achieve this through the partnership.”
CorDEX aims to give the students a better understanding of the tools available in the workplace and the restrictions required when working within hazardous petrochemical environments.
MSc student Ryan Maurice will be putting the technology to use over the summer as part of his Subsea Engineering degree.
He said: “My dissertation on pipeline corrosion and reliability aims to build a model for corrosion patterns which will be used as part of the university’s overall research on this area, and may even be adopted by industry. It is crucial to have accurate results and the equipment we had before wasn’t very reliable or quick. The UT5000 will not only provide enhanced time efficiency but will also validate the outcomes of my research.
“It is of great benefit as a student to be able to access these kinds of tools so we can be up to date with the latest developments in engineering, which will also stand us in good stead when we start our careers in oil and gas.”
The University of Aberdeen has an extensive Education Partnership Programme so that skills and knowledge can be shared between the academic institution and industry. The relationship with CorDEX means that as well as offering the instruments, software and test rigs, the company will also be involved in training and seminars to add industry perspective to their area of expertise.
Teeside headquartered CorDEX Instruments has a base in Aberdeen, Scotland the European capital for the energy industry and has a network of distributers across the USA, Europe and the Middle East.
CorDEX has already established a reputation since it was launched in 2009 in the mining and chemicals sectors and is now positioning itself as a leading manufacturer of intrinsically safe and non destructive testing products for the oil and gas industry.

Launch of intrinsically safe pipeline corrosion tool

Ultrasonic tool pinpoints risk areas as pressure mounts for better pipeline maintenance
Houston, Texas, May 2, 2011 CorDEX Instruments today launched a new ultrasonic tool for detecting corrosion in pipelines which for the first time provides the ability to build a predictive maintenance program to improve safety.
CorDEX unveiled the dynamic handheld UT5000 at the Offshore Technology Conference in Houston. The intrinsically safe tool for non-destructive testing has the ability to rapidly measure metal thickness to establish the extent of corrosion and is combined with intelligent data tracking.
The UT5000 with CorDEX CONNECT uses RFID technology to locate and log up to 1,000 measurements, each linked to a specific location, date and time. It can be used for days or weeks in the field before the data is downloaded, providing accurate corrosion analysis and helping to predict potential failures. A unique corrosion mode helps identify thinning spots and MultiECHO™ technology improves measurement accuracy on uneven surfaces.
The tool has been developed in response to integrity issues, particularly in ageing pipelines which can run for thousands of miles. Calls have been made recently for an increase in fines following tragic pipeline incidents in the US where defective welds and poor testing and record keeping have been blamed.
Marcus Halliday, CorDEX Instruments Director said: “More than 2.5 million miles of pipeline deliver oil and gas to communities and businesses around the US alone. Multiply that many times around the world and it is clear that pipeline maintenance programs based on solid information can save companies millions of dollars and avert dangerous failures. The UT5000 can safely and rapidly measure any corrosion and with its smart RFID technology, can build the robust report required to identify and trend developing trouble spots.”
CorDEX Instruments is a UK based specialist in intrinsically safe and explosion-proof instruments for Non Destructive Testing (NDT) and inspection.
The company has developed CorDEX CONNECT – a software programme which can be downloaded to any PC – which collects and organises the data obtained on site, ultimately giving the inspector a detailed account of the condition of the pipeline at any specific location.
Mr Halliday added: “Only comprehensive testing and good maintenance can ensure these vast ageing infrastructures are fit for purpose. For the first time, UT5000 provides the combination of intrinsic safety, location tagging, measurement accuracy and analysis capabilities to build a comprehensive predictive maintenance report to reduce risk.”
Last month US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood launched a national pipeline safety initiative following fatal incidents involving ageing pipelines. Government officials and industry leaders gathered on April 18 to discuss steps for improving safety of pipeline infrastructure. Secretary LaHood is calling on Congress to increase the maximum civil penalties for pipeline violations from $100,000 per day to $250,000 per day, and from $1 million for a series of violations to $2.5 million.
More than 2.5 million miles of pipelines are responsible for delivering oil and gas to communities and businesses across the United States. Currently, these pipelines are operated by approximately 3,000 companies and fall under the safety regulations of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA).
The intrinsically safe tool can also be used offshore without obtaining ‘hot work’ permits, so will be also be ideal for ageing assets in the North Sea and Gulf of Mexico where many structures are now past their original design life
About the UT5000
 The UT5000 is tested for Zone 1 IIC T4 hazardous areas, so no hot work permit is required. Designed for rugged environments, an over-moulded body protects a 3.1" RGB TFT colour screen with backlight. The dual-element, 4MHz transducer is adjustable up to 10Hz with accuracy of +/- 0.05mm. UT5000 accuracy is +/- 0.05mm, in both single point and continuous measurement mode, delivering unprecedented accuracy and flexibility to classified area NDT inspectors. The tester features both single point and corrosion modes, allowing the user to identify specific points of thinning in a pipe wall.  Large, well-spaced buttons allow users ease of operation, even when wearing gloves. The UT5000 is available through distributors worldwide. Additional accessories, including extra transducers, software and RFID tags, are also available.
About CorDEX Connect
 CorDEX CONNECT is the first system to integrate RFID technology, reporting software and a handheld intrinsically safe tester to enable predictive maintenance for pipelines and fixed equipment in hazardous areas.  The UT5000 Ultrasonic Tester with CorDEX CONNECT uses RFID to tag every thickness measurement with a specific location, date and time. A proprietary software programme then collects and organizes the data, giving engineers a comprehensive view of the pipeline at any specific location. With CorDEX CONNECT, those responsible for monitoring pipeline safety can use data collected by anyone in the field to create predictive maintenance programs. Using CorDEX CONNECT trend analysis capabilities, trouble spots can be identified from measurements taken over multiple visits. Users can easily create printable charts and graphs, such as “thickness over time.” Data also can be exported to Microsoft Excel or into a .csv file.  CorDEX CONNECT senses when the tester may be out of calibration, alerting the user to suspect readings. When the tool is sent for calibration, real-time tracking allows the user to track its transport and calibration status.

Hardide captures high risk chemical process with ATEX certified digital camera

Hardide Coatings, global developer of patented metal coatings for the oil industry, is using a new anti-hazard digital camera from CorDEX Instruments to capture chemical processes that have never been recorded before.
Hardide had struggled to find a camera robust enough to use in its high risk chemical tank areas, but was keen to be able to capture the process for product control and testing as well as training purposes.
The Centurion XP Dual is custom designed and ATEX certified for use in Zone 1 IIC T4 (explosive areas and vapour atmospheres). Encased in aluminium with an ultra-bright display protected by armoured glass, the XP Dual is custom designed for the harshest environments.
Steve Guse, Operations Manager at Hardide Coatings said: “We regularly use digital cameras to record processes for our clients and for internal use, but there are some parts of the factory that up until now have been ‘no go’ areas. A normal digital camera could create an electrical spark that would have disastrous effects in areas where we have chemical baths and stripping tanks. Not only did the Centurion XP Dual allow us for the first time to record images in these restricted areas, the design with large buttons and backlit display was ideal for use with the protective suits that our engineers have to wear.”
Hardide is the developer of advanced Tungsten Carbide based metal coatings that increase the life of critical metal parts operating in abrasive, erosive, corrosive and chemically aggressive environments. The coatings are used globally in a diverse range of severe service applications for customers from oil industry multi-nationals such as Weatherford International, FMC Technologies and Expro Group to small, innovative engineering companies.
The Centurion XP Dual is now being successfully used by Hardide to photograph materials being treated in a highly aggressive acid etch tank which is corrosive and would destroy a normal camera. It is also being used at the stripping tank, where explosive hydrogen gas is produced. The Centurion XP Dual can store hundreds of images which can be transferred via a high speed USB.
Mr Guse added: “There is an extremely corrosive atmosphere in parts of our treatment processes as well as the potential for splashes. The CorDEX Centurion digital camera survived this and produced crystal clear images, which is great for our records and to inform customers about the treatment of their components. The macro-lens attachments and strobe flash were also useful for close up shots.”
Yorkshire headquartered CorDEX Instruments is building a reputation in the energy sector for its unique product range. It plans to launch more bespoke products during 2011 for use in hazardous areas.
Marcus Halliday, General Manager said: “Taking photographs in hazardous areas is challenging for many organisations and the Centurion XP Dual was invented in direct response to feedback from industry. We are delighted that Hardide Coatings has chosen the Centurion XP Dual to help inform its customers of the processes it uses. The design is as simple to use as every-day digital models, but is built to withstand the most challenging work environments.”

CorDEX Instruments to get behind Maggie's appeal with local race ace

CorDEX Instruments has chosen Monty’s Maggie’s Appeal as its charity for 2011 and plans to fundraise thousands of pounds.
The company that designs and manufactures ATEX tested equipment for use offshore in hazardous areas kick-started its efforts by creating an e-Christmas card and donating the £500 it would have spent to the cancer support centre appeal.
CorDEX recently announced a sponsorship deal with 20-year-old Aberdeen racing driver Glynn Geddie and is planning a special race event at Silverstone in summer 2011 to fundraise for Maggie’s.
The manufacturer of explosion proof digital cameras and offshore hazard area equipment is backing Glynn who helped hisTrackspeed colleague David Ashburn scoop first place in the British GT Championships earlier this year.
Marcus Halliday, General Manager at CorDEX Instrument said: “We have been reading about the positive difference that a Maggie’s Cancer Centre would make in Aberdeen and decided we had a great opportunity to raise funds for a brilliant local appeal. We will plan events during 2011 with the biggest prize being a Porsche race with Glynn Geddie, which we’re sure will attract a lot of interest.”
Glynn is currently the British Racing Drivers’ Rising Star, following in the tyre treads of Formula 1 greats Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, and has been tipped for big things in 2011.
He said: “I am extremely grateful to CorDEX Instruments for their support and I’m already looking forward to when the new season starts when I can hopefully do them proud and also help raise money for Monty’s Maggie’s appeal.”
The Monty’s Maggie’s Appeal is being fronted by Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres and the Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation, set up by golfer Colin Montgomerie in memory of his mother, who died from the disease.
It is aiming to raise £3million to open a Maggie’s centre at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary to offer practical and emotional care to people with cancer and their loved ones from across the north-east.
Aberdeen is the only Scottish city not to have a Maggie’s centre at present and the Press and Journal is supporting the bid.
Yorkshire headquartered CorDEX Instruments has recently launched a new base in Aberdeen as it brings its unique product range to the oil and gas industry.
CorDEX Instruments manufacture ATEX certified products including the world’s first explosion proof digital camera with flash and zoom, which can be used offshore without hot permits. It will be launching its latest product, the LaserMETER3000XP, a handheld tool for safe precision measuring in hazardous areas, in January.

Dual certified explosion-proof digital camera… first to include a detachable macro lens

Everything that a professional inspector or consultant could want from an explosion-proof digital camera comes as standard with the latest addition to the CorDEX range. The new Centurion XP DUAL, from this British developer of hazardous area instrumentation, is ATEX certified for use both above and below ground. And unlike other cameras it is supplied with two interchangeable lenses for high accuracy close-up and wide-angle imaging.

Dual certified explosion-proof digital camera… first to include a detachable macro lensThe Centurion XP DUAL is in fact the only ATEX Certified Explosion-proof digital camera available for hazardous environments that enables the capture of crystal clear images at distances of between 50mm and 100mm with a standard macro lens. A typical use would be the documentation of detail on equipment rating plates. This enhances the scope of the camera, adds value to the inspection and allows visual records to be more comprehensive.
Equally suited for use in the petrochemical or mining environment, the XP DUAL captures still images at a user-selectable resolution up to 10 megapixels. AVI movie capability is also standard providing a resolution of 640 x 480 at 30fps. The camera’s 4GB memory allows high capacity image and movie storage and both can be downloaded via high speed USB in a safe area.

The standard features also include 4x zoom, autotimer, scene modes, white balance and two illumination options for low light working conditions. The high intensity strobe flash enables wide angle illumination for still shots whilst the detachable low intensity LED lamp is designed for close-up shots and movie capture.

Housed in a permanent anti-static over-mould, the Centurion XP DUAL has a rugged feel and is supplied with a removable/rechargeable battery, charging station, communication wand, battery removal tool, optical accessory adaptor, macro lens, wide-angle lens, LED lamp and a hard transport case completes the kit.

CorDEX Instruments has released the Centurion XPG ATEX certified 5Mp digital camera with strobe flash. The cameras support applications within Zone 1 IIC T4 type G (Vapour) explosive atmospheres and will provide users with the ability to document equipment with both still and moving images.
World’s first ATEX certified 5 megapixel digital camera with strobe flashThe cameras can be used to help document compliance with Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR), assure malfunctioning equipment and processes are identified correctly, enable rapid, accurate repairs to ensure plant operation is at maximum efficiency which in turn reduces the need to extraneous fuel and a corresponding reduction in carbon emissions.
Centurion XPG also plays a key part in the Quality Control and repeatability of production processes. Each production step can be documented by a short movie file or suitable still images to ensure compliance with the original design intent. Final product anomalies such as discolouring can be recorded quickly and easily as visual images with the camera to assist with continual quality improvement.
Centurion XPG is equipped with a 5 million pixel detector array with onboard interpolation options allowing an increase in image resolution to 10 million pixels. A 4x digital zoom allows the camera to be used for both intricate plant details and wide area shots. Onboard memory options range from 512Mb to 2GB which can allow thousands of pictures to be stored onboard. Images and movies can be searched within the explosive area quickly via the keypad and are viewed on the bright 2.5” TFT screen.
